Why The Wandering Edit

When I was in college, I studied Interior Design and Architecture. A program rooted in art and design offered plenty of chances to travel abroad, both for a full semester and during the summer. After taking art history and a course on the history and philosophy of architecture, I felt drawn to Europe, particularly the Renaissance. So when a program in Italy was offered after my sophomore year, I jumped at the chance.

I was the first person in my immediate family to go to Europe, and it opened my eyes in so many ways. It was the subtle cultural differences that stayed with me. The biggest surprise was the food. Everyone will tell you there’s nothing better than fresh Italian cuisine, but it was the produce that stunned me. Fruit and vegetables straight from a farm taste nothing like the mass-produced versions we get at grocery stores in the US.

While the entire trip was incredible, the moments I remember most are the ones spent wandering the streets of Florence, Siena, Orvieto, Padua, Milan, and Venice with nowhere in particular to be.

Around that same time, I became intrigued by photography. I carried a DSLR everywhere that summer, and during my final semester of college, I took a photography class that taught me the basics of film. From there, my passion only grew.

After working full-time for a few years, I finally had the means to travel outside of work trips, and that is where my love of photography and travel truly blossomed. I’ve now visited over 20 countries on 5 continents, along with countless cities and National Parks in the United States.

This past year, I left my corporate job after years of burnout. If you’ve ever experienced burnout, you know that creativity is one of the first things to go. Creativity requires space. It requires wonder. It requires freedom. I have always been happiest when I’m able to create.

Travel has long been a source of inspiration for me because it pulls me out of my routine and away from the day-to-day demands of life. The name The Wandering Edit comes from my two passions: traveling and photography. When I travel, I love a loose plan. I build itineraries so I have things to look forward to, but I leave plenty of time to wander the streets or linger over a cup of coffee (or vino) and enjoy the moment. And while I love capturing images, editing is one of my favorite parts of photography. It’s finding that moment in your camera roll and turning it into art, so you never forget what it felt like to be there.

By creating this blog, I hope to inspire you to unlock your passion for travel or simply plan your next trip.
